Reading for meaning

Support chat: portal access problem

Read the support chat. Choose the correct next step after each attempt and identify why one repeated suggestion is unnecessary.

Student: I can open the school portal, but the assignment page says “Access expired.” I’ve already logged out and signed in again. Support: Have you checked the date and time on your phone? Student: Yes. They are correct. I also tried the portal on my laptop ten minutes ago, and the same message appeared. Support: Good. You don’t need to sign in again because you have already tested that. Please open the class message and check whether your teacher posted a new access link. Student: I haven’t checked that yet. One moment… Yes, there is a new link from this morning. Support: Open that link and try the assignment page. Student: It works now. The old link had expired. Support: Great. If the problem returns, tell your teacher which link you used and what message appeared.
  1. What message appears on the assignment page?
  2. Which two things has the student already checked or tried?
  3. Why does Support say not to sign in again?
  4. What fixes the problem?

Target: 60–75 words

  • I named the device/service and exact problem.
  • I included at least two attempted fixes.
  • I reported the current result or error message.

Mediation challenge

Explain the technical steps simply

Explain these English instructions to a Thai classmate in simple language, keeping the order and checking that they understand before moving on.

1) Disconnect from the school Wi-Fi. 2) Wait ten seconds. 3) Reconnect and enter the current classroom password. 4) Open the portal in a new browser tab. 5) If the error remains, take a screenshot of the message and send it to the teacher. Do not share the Wi-Fi password in a public group.

Reflect

Could another person troubleshoot from my explanation?

  • I described the exact symptom, not only “it doesn’t work.”
  • I said what I had already tried.
  • I confirmed whether the final step worked.

Stress technology words and say codes clearly

Long technology words need clear word stress, and codes/numbers are easier to understand when spoken in short groups. Keep consonant clusters such as /pr/ in projector and /str/ in restart without adding extra vowels.

Grammar help

Present perfect for troubleshooting now

Use present perfect with just, already, and yet when a recent action is connected to the problem now. Use simple past when you name a finished past time such as yesterday or ten minutes ago. Ask Have you checked…? to avoid repeating steps.

More practice
  • Describe one technology problem using problem + two attempted fixes + current result.
  • Change three finished-time sentences between present perfect and simple past correctly.
  • Practise saying codes and numbers in short groups with a brief pause.
