Category Sprint: English Classroom Activity

Group words by meaning and justify which category fits. Includes a worked example and printable pair activity.

Suggested: A1; adapt the difficulty to the learner • 10 minutes

Your learning goal

Group words by meaning and justify which category fits.

Understand the idea

A category is a group with a shared feature. Read the category labels carefully; they tell you how specific your answer should be.

Some words belong to several categories in everyday language. Use the available labels and context, then explain the shared feature. A timed answer alone does not show whether a learner understands the grouping.

Worked example

  1. With categories fruit / transport / furniture, “banana” belongs to fruit.
  2. Reason: “A banana is a fruit.” Add “apple” as another member and “bus” as a non-example.

Try it step by step

  1. Open Category Sprint and choose a suitable difficulty. Start with Easy if the skill is new.
  2. Play a short round. Discuss one choice before moving on; explain the meaning or rule rather than its screen position.
  3. Invent one new category and ask your partner for two examples.
