Listen & Tap: English Classroom Activity

Recognise a spoken English word before relying on its written form. Includes a worked example and printable pair activity.

Suggested: A1; adapt the difficulty to the learner • 10 minutes

Your learning goal

Recognise a spoken English word before relying on its written form.

Understand the idea

Listen first, then choose the word you hear. Reading the options before listening can turn the task into a visual guessing game, so try one listen with your eyes away from the screen.

The game uses the device’s speech service. Voice availability and playback depend on the browser and device; test sound before class. If audio is unavailable, a teacher can read the worksheet words for an equivalent listening task.

After choosing, say the word and explain its meaning. A partner’s listening response can reveal whether you recognised the sound or only guessed from the choices.

Worked example

  1. If you hear “book”, choose book rather than a word with a different ending such as boot.
  2. Repeat “book”, then explain that it means หนังสือ. Ask a partner which word they heard you say.

Try it step by step

  1. Open Listen & Tap and choose a suitable difficulty. Start with Easy if the skill is new.
  2. Play a short round. Discuss one choice before moving on; explain the meaning or rule rather than its screen position.
  3. Try a partner listening task without showing any written choices.

Teacher notes and sample answers

Compare the listener’s word with the speaker’s intended word. Repeat unclear items slowly, then at a comfortable natural pace.
