English Pronunciation and Phonics Practice

Practise English letter sounds, vowels and final consonants with audio models, a partner listening task and printable notes.

Suggested: A1–A2; choose sounds to match learners • 15 minutes

Your learning goal

Hear a final consonant, produce it in a word and help a listener distinguish two meanings.

Understand the idea

A letter name and a speech sound are different. Learn a small set of sounds, blend them into words and listen to whole words in a sentence. The Pronunciation Lab includes letter sounds, vowel practice and final-consonant material.

Focus on being understood. Some English endings and clusters may need extra practice for Thai speakers. Listen for the ending without adding an extra full syllable. A final stop does not need an exaggerated release.

Listen, pause, try and compare. Work on one feature at a time; a partner can tell you which word they heard. This activity uses human listening, not an automatic pronunciation score.

Worked example

  1. Compare “cap” and “cat”. The vowel is the same; the final consonant changes the word.
  2. Say “I have a cap.” Your partner points to cap or cat without seeing your choice. If they choose cat, practise the /p/ ending and try again.

Try it step by step

  1. Open the lab and choose a letter, vowel or final-sound section that you need.
  2. Listen to a model, pause and repeat. Try the word inside a short sentence.
  3. Do the paper listening task with a partner and record which ending was easiest to hear.

Teacher notes and sample answers

The intended word must match the listener’s choice. Use disagreement to guide practice. Accept intelligible variations; do not equate a Thai accent with an error.
