Reply Right: English Classroom Activity

Choose a response that fits what another speaker is trying to do. Includes a worked example and printable pair activity.

Suggested: A1–A2; adapt the difficulty to the learner • 15 minutes

Your learning goal

Choose a response that fits what another speaker is trying to do.

Understand the idea

A reply must fit the situation as well as the grammar. Decide whether the speaker is greeting, requesting, thanking, inviting or asking for information before you answer.

More than one reply can be possible in real life. Use the game’s context to choose the best available option, then discuss another polite response that could work.

Worked example

  1. A: “Can I borrow your pencil?” B: “Sure. Here you are.”
  2. The speaker is making a request. “I am twelve” does not answer that request.

Try it step by step

  1. Open Reply Right and choose a suitable difficulty. Start with Easy if the skill is new.
  2. Play a short round. Discuss one choice before moving on; explain the meaning or rule rather than its screen position.
  3. Act out a short conversation using a new situation, not the exact game prompt.
