Suggested: A1–A2; adapt the difficulty to the learner • 15 minutes

Your learning goal

Arrange words into a useful sentence and explain the role of the subject and verb.

Understand the idea

English word order helps show who does what. Begin with a simple statement, find its subject and verb, then consider the words that complete its meaning.

A correct order is a starting point for communication. Change one detail to make the sentence true for you. Read it aloud and ask whether a listener can understand the message.

Worked example

  1. Words: “a / have / I / pencil”. Arrange them as “I have a pencil.”
  2. “I” is the subject; “have” is the verb. Keep “a” before the singular countable noun “pencil”.

Try it step by step

  1. Open Sentence Builder and choose a suitable difficulty. Start with Easy if the skill is new.
  2. Play a short round. Discuss one choice before moving on; explain the meaning or rule rather than its screen position.
  3. Write a new sentence using the same pattern, then scramble it for a partner.
