Spelling Scramble: English Classroom Activity

Put letters in the right order and check the spelling against a word’s meaning. Includes a worked example and printable pair activity.

Suggested: A1; adapt the difficulty to the learner • 10 minutes

Your learning goal

Put letters in the right order and check the spelling against a word’s meaning.

Understand the idea

Use the meaning clue to identify the word before arranging its letters. Say it slowly, look for familiar letter patterns and check that every required letter is used.

English spelling is not always a one-letter, one-sound system. When a spelling surprises you, note the whole word or a useful letter group. Finish by writing the word without looking.

Worked example

  1. Letters: t / a / c. Meaning: แมว. Build “cat”.
  2. Read cat, cover it and write it again. Then use “The cat is small.”

Try it step by step

  1. Open Spelling Scramble and choose a suitable difficulty. Start with Easy if the skill is new.
  2. Play a short round. Discuss one choice before moving on; explain the meaning or rule rather than its screen position.
  3. Use look, cover, write and check for two words you found difficult.
