  2. How did the organisers change the schedule?
  3. What does the speaker remember most?

Reading for meaning

The trip that did not go to plan

Read in English first. Identify the purpose, main idea, useful details, and the language function for this week before opening Thai help.

Last month, our class travelled to a science centre outside Lampang. The morning started normally. While we were waiting for the bus, our teacher checked the student list and reminded us about the schedule. About forty minutes after we left school, dark clouds appeared and heavy rain began. At first, everyone thought it would stop quickly. Then traffic slowed near a flooded road, and the driver had to take another route. By the time we arrived at the science centre, the first activity had already finished. I felt disappointed because I had wanted to see the robotics demonstration. However, the staff changed our programme and gave us extra time in the energy exhibition. The worst part came later when I realised that my small bag was missing. My friends helped me look under the seats, but we could not find it. Eventually, a staff member called our teacher. Someone had found the bag near the entrance and handed it in. Looking back, the day was stressful, but it became one of the trips I remember most clearly because so many things changed unexpectedly.
  1. What changed the original travel plan?
  2. What had happened by the time the class arrived?
  3. What problem happened later?
  4. What does the writer remember most clearly?

Connected writing

Independent writing: Tell the Whole Story

Write a connected story about a school, family, travel, or sports experience. Include setting, problem, important event, feeling, and result.

Target: 75–95 words

  • My events are in a clear order.
  • I used past simple and past continuous appropriately.
  • I included a reaction and result.

Mediation challenge

Retell the important events

A Thai friend tells you a long story about a delayed school trip. Retell it in English for another student, keeping the setting, main problem, turning point, and result but leaving out unnecessary details.

The class left Lampang early for a science trip. Heavy rain caused a delay, so they missed the first activity. Later, one student lost a bag, but staff found it and returned it. The day was stressful but memorable.

Reflect

How independently did I communicate?

  • My story had a clear setting, problem, and result.
  • I kept the timeline easy to follow.
  • My final sounds were clear enough for tense meaning.

Grammar help

Past simple + past continuous; when, while, by the time

Use past continuous for background actions and past simple for key events. Use when and while to connect events. “By the time …” can show that one event was already true before another point; learners only need to recognize past perfect in models, not produce it perfectly.

More practice
  • Tell the same story once with only events, then again with feelings and reactions.
  • Use while and by the time in two original story sentences.
  • Practise final -ed and final consonant clusters without adding an extra vowel.
